Pavao Žanić

Pavao Žanić (born May 20, 1918 in Kaštel Novi ; † January 25, 2000 ) was a Catholic clergyman and bishop of Mostar-Duvno (-Trebinje-Mrkan) .

Life

After studying theology , Pavao Žanić was ordained a priest on June 1, 1941 and was active in pastoral care.

Pope Paul VI appointed Žanić on December 9, 1970 titular bishop of Edistiana and coadjutor bishop of Mostar-Duvno. The bishop of Mostar-Duvno, Petar Čule , gave him episcopal consecration on May 2nd of the following year. Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Vrhbosna , Smiljan Franjo Čekada , and the Archbishop of Split-Makarska , Frane Franić .

With the age-related resignation of Petar Čules on September 14, 1980, he followed this as Bishop of Mostar-Duvno and Apostolic Administrator of Trebinje-Mrkan. In 1993 he retired.

Međugorje

When the supposed apparitions of Mary began in Međugorje in 1981 , Žanić was the local ordinary responsible for them because the parish belonged to his diocese. At first, Žanić had a very positive attitude towards the alleged apparitions and supposed seers and considered them credible and genuine. Gradually, however, he doubted their authenticity and later the investigative commissions confirmed that no supernatural processes could be detected there (non constat de supernaturalitate) .

In the course of the development of "Međugorje" Žanić came to the conclusion that only a poor copy of the diocesan pilgrimage site of Hrasno had been created there. In Hrasno Maria has been venerated as the " Queen of Peace " for a long time .
