After the death of Bishop Alojzije Mišić , Čule was appointed Bishop of Mostar-Duvno on April 15, 1942. The Archbishop of Vrhbosna , Ivan Šarić , donated him the episcopal ordination on October 4, 1942. Co- consecrator was the Archbishop of Zagreb , Alojzije Stepinac . The consecration was assisted by the Abbot of Montevergine , Giuseppe Ramiro Marcone OSB .

Čule's bishop's coat of arms shows a depiction of the Sacred Heart above the symbol of his hometown Mostar, the Old Bridge . His motto was Adveniat regnum tuum - Thy kingdom come.

During the communist regime of Yugoslavia after the end of the Second World War , Čule, who had already opposed the so-called Independent State of Croatia , openly denounced the killing of 28 Franciscans by the " Yugoslav People's Liberation Army " at the Bishops' Conference in Zagreb from September 17 to 21, 1945 at the Široki Brijeg massacre . Because of the criticism of the communist rule of Yugoslavia, Petar Čule was sentenced in a show trial in April 1948 to a total of 11 years in prison. He was also assumed to have supported Croatian guerrilla groups , such as those around Vinko Škrobo , who put up armed resistance to the communist regime of Yugoslavia in the first post-war years. Čule spent his imprisonment initially in Zenica ; it was intended to move him with other prisoners to Sremska Mitrovica in 1951 . Čule was deliberately hit by a train with other prisoners and seriously injured in both legs. Čule was released from custody in autumn 1955, subject to conditions. In early 1958 he resumed his service as Bishop of Mostar-Duvno and Apostolic Administrator of Trebinje-Mrkan.

Čule participated as a councilor in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council . After a total of 30 years of waiting, he was able to consecrate Mostar Cathedral, which was completed in 1980 . At the age of 82 he resigned from the office of Bishop of Mostar-Duvno. By accepting his resignation on September 14, 1980, Pope John Paul II appointed him titular archbishop pro hac vice of Giufi in recognition of his special services .

Petar Čule died on July 29, 1985. He was buried in the crypt of Mostar Cathedral.
