Domenico Carafa della Spina di Traetto (* July 12, 1805 in Naples ; † June 17, 1879 there ; also Domenico Carafa or Domenico Carafa di Traetto ) was Archbishop of Benevento and Cardinal .

Life

Domenico Carafa, from the noble family Carafa della Spina , was the son of Francesco Carafa della Spina, 3rd Duke of Traetto , and Paola Orsini . Pope Paul IV was one of his paternal relatives, Pope Benedict XIII. on the part of the mother. From 1817 he studied in Rome and received his doctorate in civil and canon law in 1826. Already in 1819, at the age of 14, he was an Apostolic Vice Delegate in Ravenna. In the following years Carafa was active as such in Italy several times. He was ordained a priest on May 30, 1841 .

Pope Gregory XVI appointed him archbishop of Benevento on July 22, 1844 and accepted him on the same day as cardinal priest of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri in the college of cardinals . Carafa was initially reluctant to accept the appointment, but did so on the advice of his close friend Cardinal Giovanni Maria Mastai-Ferretti , later Pope Pius IX. He was ordained bishop on August 11, 1844 by Cardinal Vincenzo Macchi , secretary of the Holy Office . After the death of Gregory XVI. Cardinal Carafa took part in the conclave of 1846 , the Pius IX. chose. During the revolutions of 1848 he withdrew to his hometown of Naples. He was only able to return to his archbishopric in January 1849. On April 18, 1850, he forbade his clergy to participate in political meetings. In the following years Cardinal Carafa was limited to purely spiritual tasks, the only thing worth mentioning being the diocesan synod of 1855, to which he presented the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, which he had announced the previous year. In September 1860, in the course of the unification of Italy, his power as papal duke was withdrawn, he was also expelled from Benevento and the seminary was converted into a barracks. Only in April 1867 was Carafa able to return to Benevento.

In 1864 Pius IX appointed him. Chamberlain of the Holy College of Cardinals, which he remained until March 27, 1865. From 1869 to 1870 Cardinal Carafa took part in the First Vatican Council as a council father . As one of the few remaining cardinals who were still held by Gregory XVI. were appointed, he took part in the conclave of 1878 . The new Pope Leo XIII. assigned him on May 12, 1879 the titular church of San Lorenzo in Lucina . When he wanted to travel to Rome to receive his titles, he had to stop in Naples for health reasons, where he then died.
