Giovanni Battista Bussi (the younger) (born January 29, 1755 in Viterbo , Papal States ; † January 31, 1844 in Benevento ) was an Italian cardinal and archbishop of Benevento .

Life

Bussi, who came from a noble family, studied civil and canon law at the University of La Sapienza in Rome until 1780 . After he was in 1781 at the Curia under Pope Pius VI. came, he was ordained first a subdeacon and then a deacon in 1782 . The Pope also awarded him the title of papal house prelate. On September 21, 1782, Bussi received the sacrament of ordination. After various activities at the Curia, he became governor of his hometown Viterbo in 1799 , which he remained until 1800. Under the new Pope Pius VII he became an auditor at the Roman Rota in February 1801 and in 1809 got a post in the penitentiary. When the French occupied Rome in the same year, they captured Bussi in Castel Sant'Angelo and brought him to Paris, where he was arrested until 1814.

When he was able to return to Rome, he resumed his old offices and in 1815 became consultor of the Congregation for Rites . Shortly before the death of Pius VII, he became General Auditor of the Apostolic Chamber.

Pope Leo XII. accepted him on May 3, 1824 as cardinal priest of San Pancrazio in the college of cardinals and appointed Bussi on the same day as archbishop of Benevento. Camerlengo Bartolomeo Pacca donated him episcopal ordination three weeks later . Cardinal Bussi participated in the conclaves from 1829 and 1830-1831 . Thirteen years after the election of Gregory XVI. he died two days after his 89th birthday. At that time he was the oldest cardinal in the world.
