List of islands in the Thames

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article lists the islands in the Thames in England. The small lock islands that were created during the construction of these locks and some very small ones that directly adjoin larger ones are not listed. The Isle of Dogs and Isle of Grain are no longer islands, even though they kept their names. Westminster was an island called Thorney Island . Some other islands are only protrusions, which are marked by a small ditch.

Most of the islands are natural islands. Some islands were created by relocating the shipping route. Many islands in the Thames are called either "ait" or "eyot". The islands called Ait are usually long, narrow islands that have been formed by deposits.

Oxford floodplain

In the area of Oxford , the river divides into several arms in a meadow landscape in which numerous islands have emerged. On the right, a large island is formed by the Seacourt Stream , Botley Stream, and Bulstake Stream . There are smaller islands, including an island called Osney, formed by the Bulstake Stream and the River Thames, and the Osney Ditch . Suburbs of Oxford Grandpont and New Hinksey are on an island formed by the Bulstake Stream, the Hinksey Stream and the Weirs Mill Stream . Iffley Meadows is an island west of Iffley Lock formed by the Weirs Mill Stream and the Thames.

On the left bank of the river, Fiddler's Island and Osney Island are between Castle Mill Stream and the Thames. Cripley Meadow Island is formed by the Fiddler's Island Stream , Castle Mill Stream and the Sheepwash Channel .

Lock islands

The construction of almost all locks along the Thames made it necessary to build artificial islands to separate the locks from the weirs . The islands were created by dug a canal in which the lock was placed, so the island separates them from the natural course of the river. In many cases the lock keeper's house is on this island, which can be reached through the lock gates. These islands are only listed if they have a separate name.
