Sumptermead Ait is an island in the River Thames , above Old Windsor Lock , near Datchet , in Berkshire , England . The elongated, narrow island is forested and only separated from the mainland by a narrow channel.
The island has long been mentioned in history. In 1263 it was referred to as Sondremede when it was leased to the Prioress of St Helens in London . It is mentioned as Saunder-meade in 1586 when it was leased to Queen Elizabeth I's laundry .
