Old Windsor Lock

Old Windsor Lock is a lock in a bend in the River Thames near Old Windsor in England . Your lock canal, known as the New Cut , is only about a third as long as the river bend. The lock is at the bottom of the canal. It was built in 1822 by the Thames Navigation Commission . The area between the canal and the river is called Ham Island .

Next to the lock there is a small weir , the main weir that dams the Thames is at the beginning of the canal.

The old name of the lock was Top of Caps and the first proposals for a lock at this point were made as early as 1770. When the lock was built, no weir was built in the Thames. However, at the start of the breakthrough today, there was already an obstacle called Newman's Bucks . Today only the Lion Island remains . The weir was built in 1836. In 1868 there was a discussion about removing the lock, but it was expanded and a fall basin made. In 1957 the lock was renewed.
