Ham Island is an inhabited man-made island in the Thames , in Old Windsor , England . The island is approximately 50 acres and there are 37 houses on the island.
history
What is now the island was a peninsula surrounded by a meander of the Thames until the so-called New Cut was dug when the Old Windsor Lock was built. A weir was built at the upstream end of the island , just as a weir was built downstream at the lock. The construction of the new canal shortened the route in this section by around a third.
The original houses on the island were holiday homes, but they were replaced by larger houses. There is also a sewage treatment plant and a sanctuary for horses on the island .
Large parts of the island were flooded and evacuated in early 2014.
Mention in the literature
The island is mentioned in the novel Three Men in One Boat as the place where Windsor Castle is first seen in the distance after passing the lock .

Part of the island is part of the medieval Kingsbury Palace, a Scheduled Monument .
