Garrick's Ait (or Garrick's Eyot on the Ordnance Survey maps ), previously called Shank's Eyot , is a Werder in the Thames in England upstream from Molesey Lock

geography

The island is 330 meters upstream from Tagg's Island . There are 20 houses on the island and it was originally divided into 26 parcels, but two of them, including the east end of the island, were always tree-covered berths, and two of the roughly equal parcels have been merged. The island is only accessible by boat.

history

Garrick's Ait is named after the actor  David Garrick , whose Temple to Shakespeare and Garrick's Villa are not far away on the banks of the Thames. It is the only island in the United Kingdom to be named after an actor. As on many other islands on the Thames, weeping willows were planted on it when they came into the country in the 18th century. The wood was used for cricket bats , paddles , ladders, rifle butts and fence posts. The branches were used to make baskets or to fortify river banks.
