Benn's Island

Benn's Island , used to be called Church Eyot , Kember's Eyot and sometimes Benn's Ait . Today the island is named after the owner of a boat workshop that no longer exists. The island is located in the Thames near the banks of Middlesex near Hampton in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames above Molesey Lock and is privately owned. The river between the shores of Middlesex and the island is shallow but can be navigated with caution by small boats.

In the 19th century the island from now on was Sunbury Lock Ait -based Thames Valley Sailing Club used, which had its seat on a moored on the island houseboat, which was destroyed by fire in 1900. The island has been leased to the Hampton Sailing Club since 1945. In 1962 his clubhouse was built on stilts in front of the island. Large-scale construction work and the piles leave a casual observer with the impression that the whole island has been created artificially; however, these are only extensive extensions of the island.

The clubhouse is connected to Benn's Alley, a narrow slipway on the north bank of the river, by a hand-operated chain passenger ferry at the downstream end of the island. The Hampton Ferry connects the island with Molesey.
