Sunbury Lock Ait is a Werder in the River Thames in England at Sunbury Lock between Walton-on-Thames and Sunbury-on-Thames , Surrey . The island is uninhabited, but accessible via a footbridge from the shore and via the lock gates. Another bridge connects the island with Wheatley's Ait upstream, but this connection is not open to the public.
The island existed before the lock was built and the river was widened and deepened. The island was formerly known as Sunbury Church Ait . Then the City of London Corporation bought it from its six owners to build the lock, completed in 1815. There was a since at least the 18th century armed with a floodgate at this point. The old lock house can be seen today above the current lock.
Trees, ferns and blackberry bushes grow on the island. The Middle Thames Yacht Club and a private boat repair shop use the island.
