Desborough Island is an island in the River Thames above Sunbury Lock in Surrey , England . The island was created in the 1930s when the Desborough Cut was created by the Thames Conservancy . The island and canal are named after Lord Desborough , then Chairman of the Thames Conservancy .
The 1 km long canal cut straightened the course of the river between Weybridge and Walton-on-Thames , creating the island between the canal and the winding stretch of river at Shepperton and Lower Halliford, which is still navigable. The puncture reduced the risk of flooding in Shepperton and halved the distance on this section of the Thames.
The island consists mostly of green areas and sports fields as well as a waterworks. The island can be reached from Walton Lane in Walton-on-Thames via two bridges. Of the island's 45 hectares , 14 hectares are open green space. The island is home to the Walton Water waterworks owned by the North Surrey Water Company . The sports fields on the island include the University Vandals Rugby Club and the Weybridge Rifle and Pistol Club . Other parts of the island are owned by the Environment Agency and the Surrey and Borough Elmbridge councils .
