Cripley Meadow

The island of Cripley Meadow is located between Castle Mill Stream , a branch of the Thames and the Cotswold Line railway line to the east and Fiddler's Island Stream and Fiddler's Island on the main branch of the Thames to the west, in Oxford , England . South of the island is the Sheepwash Channel , which connects the Oxford Canal with the Thames.

history

In 1865 the possibility arose that the Great Western Railway (GWR) could become a major employer in Oxford. The railroad company's wagon construction was to be relocated from London and this meant 1,500 jobs. The City of Oxford Corporation, which had opposed the railroad 30 years earlier, offered a lease of Cripley Meadow for the workshops. The enthusiasm for the project was great. Only the University of Oxford, led by Goldwin Smith , a historian at University College , spoke out against the plan. A contract for Cripley Meadow was already in place when there was a change in the top management of the GWR and the workshops were relocated to Swindon .

Allotments

Before 1891 the island was used as a horse meadow and for hay extraction. In March 1891, approximately 14 acres of land were leased to the North Oxford and Jericho Allotments Association for allotment gardens . Over the next several years, landfill raised the land above the level of the river.

Today the Cripley Meadow Allotment Association is administered by an annually elected committee. The City of Oxford rents the land to the organization and leaves the administration to it. After 2004, 160 allotments were made usable again.

There is also an orchard called the Cripley Island Orchard.

Development

View of the University of Oxford dormitories

In 2012, construction began on the Castle Mill student housing complex between Cripley Meadow Allotments and the railroad.

The construction is controversial. One sees the view of Oxford threatened by the buildings.
