On Ray Mill Island |
Ray Mill Island is an island in the River Thames in England , at Boulter's Lock , near Maidenhead , Berkshire . The island is a park administered by the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead . The island is named after the Ray family who ran a mill on this site. The mill, built in 1726, replaced an older one and produced flour until the 1920s.
A weir runs from the upstream end of the island to the Taplow mainland . A canal for kayaks was built next to the weir on the island.
Until it was stolen in October 2011, The Companion statue stood on the island for over 20 years . The statue was a memorial to students who died in an accident while skiing. A new version of the statue was unveiled in the old location in July 2012.
