The Gibraltar Islands are two islands in the Thames upstream of the Bourne End Railway Bridge and Cookham Lock at Cookham Dean in Berkshire , England .

The upstream island is connected to the mainland by a footbridge. The islands were previously used to raise pastures .

There are a few houses on the islands. In 2014 a house was built there, the construction of which was documented by the British television channel Channel 4 for the series Grand Designs . The house is built in such a way that its foundation is shaped like a ship's hull, which ensures that the house floats when the island is flooded.
