Raven's Ait is a Werder (Eng. Ait) in the Thames between Surbiton and Hampton Court Park in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames , London , England upstream of Teddington Lock in the non-tidal part of the river.

history

Before 1911, the island was the seat of the Kingston Rowing Club , founded in 1858 , which is now located in Canbury Gardens . For a long time, the island was owned or leased by The Navy League , a non-profit organization that ran the Sea Cadet Corps and the Girls' Nautical Training Corps . Raven's Ait was the location of TS Neptun until it was replaced by  TS Royalist, a small brig .

In 1971, the former buildings were demolished except for the house of the superintendent of the Sea Cadets and replaced by the current buildings, which are used for conferences and celebrations.

In the 1980s, the Inner London Education Center used the facilities as a training center for social workers and a water sports training center.

Ravens Ait Hall Management Company Ltd filed for bankruptcy in 2008 and was dissolved.

At the beginning of 2009 the island was occupied and it was declared that the island would be converted into an environmentally friendly conference center. The occupiers also held a widely publicized conference during their occupation. In March 2009, an eviction suit was filed against the occupiers. The eviction took place on May 1, 2009. According to reports in the local press, the squatters should have used enough electricity for 45 houses, an allegation that they denied and pointed out that the previous users had not turned off numerous devices such as refrigerators.

Use as a water sports center

Raven's Ait is recognized by the Royal Yachting Association and the British Canoe Union as a training facility for their respective fields. The island was also at times a mooring for the Sparkle catamaran , designed by Angus Primrose for people with limited physical abilities.
