Brentford Ait is an uninhabited island or Werder (Ait) in the tidal section of the Thames near Brentford in London , England . It is administered by the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames .

Brentford Ait had a gap called the Hog Hole in the middle that becomes visible when the water level is high. In the 18th century there was an infamous pub on Brentford Ait called Swan or Three Swans . It was closed in 1796. The Swan Steps still lead on the shore of the mainland at the eastern end of Waterman's Park to the point where the pub was translated. The island was planted with trees in the 1920s to obscure the Brentford gasworks from the view from Kew Gardens . The island is overgrown with willows and alders and is the habitat of many birds with an important colony of herons .

For historically unnamed reasons, the island belonged to the Civil parish of Kew in Surrey ; the London Borough of Hounslow administers the neighboring Lot's Island , which is separated from Brentford Ait only by mud at low tide . The river is regularly dredged on both sides of Brentford Ait.
