Jules Beau (* 1864 in Paris ; † 1932 ) was a French sports photographer. He is considered one of the first sports reporters in history.

biography

Jules Beau was the son of a pastry chef; he was married to Louise "Lucie" Adélaïde Nuret (1865–1923), the daughter of a hotel manager. He opened his first photo studio at 19 avenue des Ternes in Paris, together with a colleague named M.-H. Fontès, who already had a studio on Avenue de Clichy. In 1890, the two photographers opened another studio at 51 Rue de Passy , which Beau acquired in 1892 and named Photographie de Passy .

Between 1894 and 1913, Beau created a diverse photographic work of astonishing modernity. He specialized in the field of sport and realized numerous portraits of athletes from all disciplines with a focus on cycling . From 1895 he worked with the magazine La Bicyclette , and from 1898 he illustrated the reports in the sports magazine La Vie au grand air . In 1898 he became a member of the Société générale d'aérostation . But he also photographed private individuals in his studio; so from 1900 he promoted to be a specialist in the photographs of small children.

In 1913 Beau ended his work as a photographer; the reasons for this are unknown. He was then the archivist of the Touring Club de France , of which he had been a member since 1895. In 1926 he left his photos to the club, for which he was honored with a silver medal from the club.

Jules Beau left albums with photographs covering the years 1894 to 1913, which were initially kept in the archives of the Touring Club. In the meantime, 36 of his albums are in the custody of the Bibliothèque nationale de France , which has put some of the photos online and made them available to the public.

In his book Visions du sport from 1989, the historian and photographer Jean-Claude Gautrand describes Jules Beau as “probably the first sports reporter in history”.
