Andersey Island is an island in the Thames upriver from Culham Lock at Abingdon in Oxfordshire .
The island was created by diverting the river between the main stream and the current branch of the Swift Ditch . The Swift Ditch was the main arm of the river until it was turned in the direction of Abingdon and the island was created. At 1.10 km², the island is one of the largest in the Thames.
The island has been the site of a royal estate since the time of the Anglo-Saxons , which was taken over by Wilhelm I. Around 1100 the property was transferred to the Abbot of Abingdon and then fell apart. The island is mostly open green space, but there is also a football club, a cricket club and various other buildings on the island.
