Formosa Island is an island in the River Thames , in England at Cookham Lock near Cookham , Berkshire . Two small islands are in the immediate vicinity.
With a size of 20 hectares , the wooded island is one of the largest islands in the Thames above Teddington Lock . The island can be reached via a footbridge from Cookham. Formosa lies between two of the river's four arms at Cookham. The closest to Cookham used to be a mill stream for a local paper mill. The other arm of the river leads to the Odney Weir . The opposite Mill Island borders the river arm to the lock. Beyond the lock access is Sashes Island . The branch of the river furthest from Cookham is Hedsor Water , the original shipping canal closed for this purpose by the construction of the weir in 1837.
