Sunbury Court Island is an inhabited island in the River Thames above Molesey Lock in Sunbury-on-Thames , Surrey , England .

The island is connected to the north bank of the river by a footbridge. There are 25 houses on small lots on the island.

The current houses date back to buildings from the beginning of the 20th century. The island was previously used as a meadow and was named Hayes Ait .

Risk of flooding

The island is in the Environment Agency's highest flood hazard category , meaning:

  • The island has a more than 1% risk of flooding once a year.
  • The Environment Agency notifies residents directly of possible flooding.

During the 2013-2014 floods in England , the water was waist-deep on the island on January 7, 2014 and a small group of residents were brought from the island to safety by rescue workers. By February 8, 2014, approximately half of the residents had been removed from the island by rescue workers.
