Steven's Eyot (also Steven's Ait ) is a narrow island or werder in the Thames in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames , London , England above Teddington Lock .

The island is 660 meters downstream from the Kingston Railway Bridge . A very small island is included on a map of the island's Ordnance Survey and this pair is referred to as Steven's Eyots .

history

An Ordnance Survey map from 1875 shows that the island used to be made up of four islets. It is referred to as Tathim's Island on an 1896 map . The current name comes from a boat operator who lived near the island in what is now Canbury Gardens . The Ordnance Survey map has been using its current name since 1913. The island is now part of a conservation area that is particularly protected in terms of landscape and structure .

use

The ship traffic is led past on the west side of the island, as there are landing stages on the east side. The island is the seat of the Small Boat Club (SBC), which uses the island as a boat launch. The SBC has leased the island from the Thames Conservancy (today's Environment Agency ) since 1960 and only club members are allowed to moor their boats permanently on the island. The administration of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames allowed the SBC to build a pier on the east side of the Thames in 1984, which the club alone may use.
