history

The name Sonning comes from the Anglo-Saxon tribal leader Sunna and Eye means island (compare Eyot ), as it is a small gravel hill in the floodplain . The square has been inhabited since the river was regulated.

Sonning Eye is a protected landscape area with 12 Grade II protected buildings, including five barns .

The Mühlkanal runs through the heart-shaped island . On the island is The Mill at Sonning , a restored 18th century watermill with origins in the Middle Ages. The mill is now used as a gastronomic experience . The Mühlkanal runs below the bar of the restaurant and drives a turbine with an 18.5 kW generator, which feeds its electricity into the public grid.

Behind the mill is the Mill House, a Grade II protected house with 2 hectares of land. The house was built in the 17th century and belonged to the wealthy Rich family. In 2014, film star George Clooney and his wife bought the house from lawyer Amal Alamuddin for the equivalent of around 10 million British pounds .
