The Sonning Backwater Bridges are two road bridges spanning two arms of the River Thames at Sonning Eye in Oxfordshire , England . They were built in 1986 to replace an older wooden structure. The bridges cross the Sonning Backwater and Mühlkanal and close the historical Sonning Bridge , the place Sonning by the river side in Berkshire connects Sonning Eye on.
The modern bridges replace a wooden structure that was complained about at the beginning of the 20th century that locomotives would endanger them and disturb the peace. The B478 that crosses the bridge is the busiest B road in Oxfordshire as it is the only way for vehicles to cross the Thames between Henley-on-Thames and Reading .
The bridges are occasionally flooded and closed to traffic when the Thames is in extreme flood.
