Bernward Schmid attended the Oblate Brothers School in Seckau Abbey from the age of 15 , where his wish to become a monk arose. On July 18, 1939, due to the annexation of Austria to Hitler's Germany, he took his religious vows at a difficult time. After the abolition of the monastery by the National Socialists, he moved to the Maria Laach Abbey . It was there that brother Notker Becker (1883–1978), a later representative of the Beuron art school , discovered his craftsmanship and gave him his first artistic training. After the war he returned to Seckau Abbey and attended the HTBLVA Graz-Ortweinschule , where he passed the master's examination to become a silver and goldsmith in 1951. He then headed the gold and silversmith's workshop in Seckau Abbey for more than 40 years, where a total of 29 apprentices learned their craft under his guidance.

From 1953 to 1989 Bernward Schmid taught art education at the Abbey High School .
