The Beuron School of Art (also known as the Beuron School ) is a group of artists that was founded in 1868 in the Abbey of Beuron near Sigmaringen for the renewal of Catholic church art. The school was strongly oriented towards Egyptian, early Christian and Byzantine art and, on the whole, was more stimulating than really refreshing. In their endeavor to revive a new religious art, they drew on the basic ideas of the Nazarenes .

founding

Peter Lenz

The architect, painter and sculptor Father Desiderius Lenz (born Peter Lenz; * 1832 in Haigerloch; † 1928 in Beuron), the Kaulbach student and convert Father Gabriel Wüger (born Jacob Wüger; * 1829 in Steckborn; † 1892 in Monte Cassino) and Father Lukas Steiner (née Fridolin Steiner; * 1849 in Ingenbohl / Schwyz; † 1906 in Beuron). Lenz had received the order from Princess Catherine von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen to build the Maurus Chapel near Beuron and brought in his friends (1868-1870) for the furnishing work. All three subsequently entered the Beuron monastery. From 1874 to 1879 they also painted the arch monastery of the Benedictine order on the Montecassino . Another major work is the Beuron Chapel of Mercy, with a significant contribution from Father Paulus Krebs . Evidence can also be found in the form of murals in the Beuron street scene: under the gable of the dilapidated cloister courtyard there are several depictions of angels. Opposite the monastery courtyard, there are paintings on the Schäfer house. These come from the summer of 1910 by Karl Caspar (1870–1956) one of the most important representatives of sacred art in the first half of the 20th century. According to Hubert Krins (Tübingen) around 100 years ago, the works of the Beuron art school had already fallen into disrepute. Much of the work was destroyed. Even in Beuron, evidence of this art direction was removed in the course of restoring the baroque appearance of the monastery church.

Another representative of the Beuron art school was Willibrord Jan Verkade (1868-1946), who belonged to the Nabis artist group. He met Desiderius Lenz while decorating the Gabriel Church in Prague . An offshoot of the Beuron art school was founded in 1890 in the Belgian Maredsous Abbey .

Brother Notker Becker OSB (1883–1978) created late works of this art direction.

The following buildings were built or redesigned with the direct involvement of the founders of the Beuron School:

Numerous drafts were not implemented. The number of follow-up buildings that were influenced by ideas from the Beuron art school is large and, according to the current state of research, can hardly be overlooked. They are located in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, USA and even Brazil.
