The Maredsous Abbey ( French : Abbaye Saint-Benoît de Maredsous ) is a Benedictine monastery in the Belgian community of Anhée-Denée near Namur in the Molignée valley , a tributary of the Meuse .
history
The monastery was founded on October 15, 1872 by a foundation of the Desclée family from Tournai and settled with monks from Beuron Abbey , Pope Leo XIII. elevated the priory of Maredsous to the Abbey of the Beuron Congregation in 1878 , whereupon Father Placidus Wolter became the first abbot. In 1890 he was followed by the important Hildebrand de Hemptinne in the Abbatiat, who was already involved in the establishment . After the First World War, the Maredsous monastery was merged with the Keizersberg abbeys in Leuven and Sankt-Andreas in Bruges to form the Belgian Benedictine Congregation in 1920.
With the support of the Belgian industrialists Henri and Jules Desclée, the architect Jean-Baptiste Bethune was commissioned to build a church. Today's monastery complex was built in the neo-Gothic style within 20 years until 1892 . Desiderius Lenz created the Beuron style frescoes for the abbey church on behalf of the Beuron abbot ; later they were expanded by André Weiss and Jacques Malmendier. On November 30, 1890, Abbot Hildebrand de Hemptinne founded a branch of the Beuron art school in Maredsous, which later became the École Saint-Joseph , which has been part of the Namur Art School since 1964.
The abbey has belonged to the Congregation of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary since 1920 .
