Congregation for the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Congregation of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary , once also called the Belgian Congregation (Latin: Congregatio Annuntiationis BMV ) is a monastery association of the Benedictine Confederation . The congregation includes Benedictine monastic and nunnery conventions in abbeys and priories.

history

The congregation was founded in 1920 when the Belgian abbeys of Maredsous and Keizersberg separated from the Beuron congregation after the experiences of the First World War ; Keizersberg Abbey is now part of the Subiaco Congregation .

Current status

The congregation is one of 21 congregations of the Benedictine order and comprises 17 independent and 12 dependent male monasteries as well as 24 female monasteries (as of 2016). The abbot president of the congregation has been Maksymilian R. Nawara OSB from the Lubin Monastery in Poland since 2018 . The fact that both male ( monks ) and female ( nuns ) monasteries belong to the union is an exception in terms of religious order and also within the Benedictine order and goes back to the Beuron congregation.
