Magna Carta Island is an island in the River Thames , England above Bell Weir Lock . The island is opposite the Runnymede water meadow . The island was transferred from Buckinghamshire to Berkshire in 1974 .
The island is one of several possible places where Johann Ohneland sealed the Magna Carta in 1215 . The document itself contains the name Runnymede, but it is possible that the island was seen as part of Runnymede.
It is known that in 1217 Heinrich III. and the later Louis VIII met on the island.
