Gianvincenzo Carafa

Gianvincenzo Carafa (* 1477 in Naples , † August 28, 1541 ibid) was an Italian Roman Catholic clergyman, bishop and cardinal .

biography

Gianvincenzo Carafa was born in Naples in 1477 as the son of Fabrizio Carafa, signor of Torre del Greco , and Aurelia Tolomei. He was a member of the della Stadera branch of the noble Carafa family and a half-nephew of Cardinal Oliviero Carafa . He became a canon of the cathedral chapter of the cathedral of Naples at an early age .

On September 13, 1497 he was elected Bishop of Rimini . At first he was administrator of the diocese until he reached the canonical age of 27. On April 1, 1504, he was raised to bishop with a dispensation because he had not yet reached canonical age. He held the bishopric until June 24, 1530, when he resigned in favor of his nephew Francesco Carafa .

He took part in the Fifth Lateran Council (1512-1517). Pope Julius II wanted to make him cardinal, but Ferdinand II of Aragon , who was then occupying the Kingdom of Naples , was against the promotion of the Neapolitans. Pope Leo X appointed him papal assistant to the throne . On December 2, 1521, during the vacancy following the death of Pope Leo X, the College of Cardinals elected him governor of Rome. He held this office until 1522, when Pope Hadrian VI. was chosen.

Pope Clement VII. Appointed him in the consistory of November 21, 1527 to Cardinal priests . On April 27, 1528 he received the cardinal's hat and the titular church of Santa Pudenziana .

From August 31, 1528 to September 6, 1536 he was administrator of the bishopric of Anglona , until he resigned in favor of his nephew Oliviero Carafa . From January 8, 1533 to January 9, 1534 he was chamberlain of the Holy College of Cardinals . He took part in the conclave of 1534 , which Pope Paul III. chose.

From July 26, 1535 to April 21, 1539 he was administrator of the bishopric of Acerra . On July 23, 1537, he decided on the titular church of Santa Prisca and on November 28, 1537 for Santa Maria in Trastevere . On August 4, 1539 he became cardinal bishop and received the suburbicarian bishopric of Palestrina . When Pope Paul III. went to Vicenza , Cardinal Carafa was installed as papal legate in Rome.

He died in Naples on August 28, 1541 and was buried in the cathedral there.
