Austindus von Auch - reliquary bust

Austindus von Auch (* around 1000 in Bordeaux ; † July 27, 1068 in Auch ) was Archbishop of Auch from 1049 until his death . He was later canonized ; his feast day is July 26th or September 25th.

Vita

Austindus was born into an unknown but likely high-ranking family around the year 1000. At an unclear point in time, he joined the Benedictine monastery of Saint-Orens . After the death of the incumbent Archbishop of Auch, he was appointed as his successor. His first known official act was the consecration of the monastery church of Saint-Mont , which was dependent on Cluny . Shortly afterwards he turned to the new building of the dilapidated cathedral of Auch ; the work was completed in 1064.

In the meantime (1155) he had founded the village of Nogaro , about 55 km northwest of Auch, on a piece of land he had acquired and to which he granted freedom rights (sauveté) . He also drew the regional clergy and the regional nobility on his side and presided over several regional councils - Jaca (1060), Saint-Sever (1061) and Auch (1068). Shortly afterwards he died.

Adoration

His bones were buried in the cathedral of Auch; it was found and raised in 1610.

presentation

Medieval representations of Austindus are unknown; his baroque reliquary bust shows him as a bishop.
