Goat Simulator is a simulation - computer game , which in 2014 was first released.

    Gameplay

In an open world , the player with the mouse and keyboard or gamepad controlling a goat in the third-person perspective . Instead of relying on a realistic replica of the life of a goat, as in an ordinary simulation game, the aim of the game is to cause as much damage as possible with the goat. With this, the player can freely explore the map while the goat runs, jumps, picks up things or licks objects and hurls them with them. The game is based on a ragdoll engine and relies on the player trying out and doing funny things (for example by taking advantage of glitches or carrying out experiments) and performing tricks for which there are points. The game can also be expanded with mods via the Steam Workshop. Furthermore, the game receives many Easter eggs and secrets. The game can be played in single-player or multiplayer online or locally in split-screen mode.

    development

The game was created as a joke game at a game jam at Coffee Stain Studios in January 2014 and was already known in the alpha version through YouTube videos (so-called Let's Play videos), which presented the game in a funny way and motivated the developers to develop the game further. Originally the game was only intended to be a prototype for the game engine.

The game idea came as an inspiration from the game QWOP . The game was developed in Unreal Engine 3 and is based on a ragdoll engine .

    Publication and sale

The game was first released on April 1, 2014 for Windows as an April Fool's joke . Pre-orderers received access to the game three days in advance . A port for MacOS and Linux was released on June 27, 2014. A mobile version for Android and iOS was launched on April 17, 2014. A console version of the game followed on April 17, 2015 for Xbox 360 and Xbox One , on August 11, 2015 for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 and on January 23, 2019 for Nintendo Switch . By August 2014, the game had sold over a million times. By January 2015 there were over 2.5 million versions sold.

    Extensions

On May 7, 2015, the paid expansion GoatZ was released, which adds zombies, a new map and crafting to the game and is based on survival horror games such as DayZ . On May 26, 2016, the Waste of Space expansion pack was added, which adds a new map to the game based on a science fiction space colony.

The game received mixed reviews and a metascore of 62. Among other things, the humorous implementation of the sandbox game system and the use of the game physics, which allow you to try out many things and create funny things, are praised. GameStar wrote that the fact that the game was so stupid and idiotic made it look clever again.

However, the game is also criticized for being known only through social media and web videos , as without them it is just a simple and error-prone product and can quickly become boring. The game designer Armin Ibrisagic assumed that goats, just like cats, can go viral on the Internet, so he got his team to mix this idea with an old-school skateboard game. In addition, the lack of long-term fun in the game is heavily criticized.

Because of the game concept, Goat Simulator is also compared to skateboarding games like Tony Hawk's Skateboarding and games that can cause a lot of chaos (like the Grand Theft Auto series), with the difference that you control a goat.

Some games adopted the concept of a fun parody of simulation games with a special game physics. These include, for example, I am Bread or Surgeon Simulator . Since these games are also partly designed for entertainment on a web video platform, but much less for your own gaming, the term “YouTube Bait” is also used here.
