Since its release in November 2008, the game has been known for its high level of difficulty. The game rose to prominence in early December 2010 after blogger Ray William Johnson covered a YouTube video commenting on the game. Since then, the game has become an internet phenomenon. Despite the criticism of the complicated keyboard controls, Foddy's homepage reached over 30 million views, according to Wired magazine.

The game was on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City on July 27, 2011 and was part of an event called Arcade sponsored by Kill Screen, a video game art company. After the success of the game, Foddy developed another game called "GIRP" which was published on his website in 2011.

An iPhone app was also released during this time. The app follows the same gameplay as the original version, only the controls differ. The player controls the character by moving his thumbs around the diamonds on the screen. A version for Android finally followed on July 3, 2013.
