Lukas Kern (born October 15, 1681 in Obernzell (formerly: Hafnerzell); † September 12, 1749 in Passau ) was a German ship master , landlord and benefactor.

Life

Lukas Kern was the son of a cooper and winemaker who also ran a Danube ferry. The son learned his trade from his father and at the age of 30 tried to become a member of the boatmen's guild in Passau by marrying the daughter Anna Theresia of the shipmaster Rupprecht Schwarz . At first, however, the guild resisted and argued that the office of shipmaster could not be bequeathed to the daughter or her husband, that Kern did not have the necessary knowledge and that he was also too rich. With the help of the toll office and the prince-bishop's court council, however, Kern was able to enforce his plans.

Apart from the apparently very lucrative ship transport, the Kern couple had other sources of income: The Gasthaus zur Goldenen Sonne in the Lower Sand in Passau as well as the Holztrift on the Ilz and the salt trade were so profitable that the history painter Ferdinand Wagner created a fresco in the Ratskeller for it. Kern's fortune, which arose from the Trift business, amounted to approximately 40,000 guilders at the time of his death.

Foundations

The orphanage

Lukas Kern decreed in his will that an orphanage should be set up from his inheritance for at least twelve girls and twelve boys, who should also be educated there and learn something. The foundation established for this purpose received 72,400 guilders after Kern's death. Although the construction was completed earlier, the orphanage opened in 1758 and still exists today as the Lukas Kern children's home in Passau. On the south facade of the house there is a portrait in memory of the founder of Kern. The orphanage also included the orphanage chapel, which was built between 1750 and 1763 by Johann Michael Schneitmann in the Rococo style. Streets in Obernzell and Passau were also named after Lukas Kern and his tomb, including ten relief images that tell his family history, is in the church of St. Paul on the Rindermarkt .

But not only the orphans benefited from Kern's estate and donations. Thanks to Kern's legacy, Grainet bei Freyung became an independent parish in 1750.
