Lawrence Joseph "Larry" Mullen, Jr. (born October 31, 1961 in Dublin ) is an Irish musician and drummer for the band U2 .

Life

Larry Mullen grew up with his two sisters in the Dublin suburb of Artane. The younger died at the age of nine. Mullen's mother was killed in a car accident in 1978. Mullen later put the Jr. after his name to prevent his father from getting the son's horrific tax bills.

Mullen is in a relationship with his childhood sweetheart Ann Acheson. He has three children with her and lives with his family in Howth near Dublin. He is known for his love of Elvis Presley's music and Harley-Davidson branded motorcycles . As an enthusiastic motorcyclist, he supported an advertising campaign by the Irish transport authorities for more safety when riding a motorcycle. Mullen is also a big fan of the Irish national football team , for which he wrote the song Put 'em under pressure in 1990 .

Mullen's parents thought it was good for their son to learn an instrument. Mullen received piano lessons from the age of eight. However, he quickly discovered that he was much more interested in drumming, and so his sister gave him his first drum kit in 1970.

Mullen began taking classes and joined various groups, including the Artane Boys Band and the General Post Office band . Influenced by the predominant military style of playing there, Mullen developed a style that is characteristic of U2's music to this day. In 1976, Mullen looked for other musicians to start his own band through a notice on the notice board at Mount Temple School in Dublin. A few young people turned up in Mullen's kitchen, all of whom were interested in playing in this band. Ultimately, Mullen picked four people: Paul David Hewson (aka Bono ), David Howell Evans (aka The Edge ), Adam Clayton, and Dik Evans (Edge's older brother). Clayton was only chosen by Mullen because he looked so cool and threw his bass jargon around. On the first day the band was named The Larry Mullen Band after its founder . However, this name only lasted one day. At the next rehearsal the band was renamed Feedback . In 1978 Dik Evans got out of Mullen's band and switched to another Dublin band, the Virgin Prunes . From then on, the band called itself The Hype  - that's how U2 was born (they didn't get the name U2 until 1979 during a demo session). Mullen has worked with many well-known artists such as B. B. King , Daniel Lanois , Nanci Griffith , REM and Johnny Cash . In 1996 he and his band friend Adam Clayton reworked the main theme of the film Mission: Impossible . They have received several awards for this. In 2016 Rolling Stone listed him as 96th of the 100 best drummers of all time .

Mullen is considered a very meticulous person. The U2 album How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb was only finished in 2004 because Mullen did not fit the lyrics and therefore the recordings were very delayed. Mullen is also instrumental in everything relating to U2's merchandising . Nothing goes on sale that has not been checked and approved by him.

Movie

Mullen plays the role of a thief in his film debut Man on the Train with Donald Sutherland . The film was made in Orangeville , Ontario , Canada and was released in theaters in 2011.
