Maestro is a Hungarian animated short film directed by Géza M. Tóth in 2005.

action

Five minutes before the performance, a songbird sits in his cloakroom and meticulously prepares for his big mission. A gripper arm looked after him, powdering and brushing him a drink handed to him for vocal preparation, taking care of the cylinder and the other clothes. When the bird practices the music ladder for too long to train its voice, the gripper arm holds its beak as a precaution, which is then cleaned.

In the end the bird rises. The gripper arm adjusts the cylinder again and ties the fly around the bird before it quickly grabs it. The stage door swings open and the gripper arm catapults the bird outside, which makes rapid whistling sounds - it is the cuckoo of a cuckoo clock .

production

Maestro was realized with a budget of around 80,000 dollars and had its premiere on May 1, 2005 at the Portable Film Festival in Hungary.

A special feature of the film is the camera perspective: it moves around the bird in a jerky and circular motion like a second hand, imitating the last few minutes before the performance.

Awards

Maestro was nominated in 2007 for an Oscar in the category “ Best Animated Short Film ”, but could not prevail against The Danish Poet - A Love Story .

Maestro won the Festival Award at the Cinanima in 2005. At the Zlín International Film Festival for Children and Youth, director Géza M. Tóth received the Hermína Týrlová Award for Maestro ; Tóth was also awarded the prize for the best animated film at the 2006 International Panorama of Independent Filmmakers in Greece .
