action

In his three-part film, Longley portrays the people of the war-torn country and looks with his camera through the eyes of the Sunnis , Shiites and Kurds . Firstly, the fate of the eleven-year-old Sunni boy Mohammed, who has little chance of defending himself against the violence that is not only being done to him, but also prevails around him, is discussed. Second, the followers of radical clerics and Shiite politician Sadr , who want to achieve the enforcement of Islamic law at any cost, while shown take into account as a natural means of violence, and also to the Shia - death squads will be discussed in the Mahdi militia. Third, a Kurdish farming family is shown welcoming the US presence in the country, which guarantees them a certain level of freedom that they were previously denied. The son of the family dreams of one day working as a doctor.

The film reflects the life of the ordinary people of Iraq, their misery, their anger, but also the hopes that they harbor and joy and despair that alternate.

criticism

Iraq in Fragments received overwhelmingly positive ratings. David Ansen from Newsweek found that the film offers “beautiful”, “almost poetic” images, but also makes us feel how broken the country is and undermines it by showing the different perspectives of Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds . AO Scott from the New York Times spoke of one of the best documentaries on this topic because the film deals with people's everyday lives and deals with individual fates . Regardless of whether the war in Iraq is right or wrong, 'Iraq in Fragments' is a reminder of how complicated and painful it is . Michael Moore spoke of a "beautiful film" and said what this film shows you would never see on the evening news . David Edelstein of New York Magazine concluded that the film was more than the sum of its fragments. The montages are intense, the pictures gorgeous, the film makes something tangible and the more you feel, the less you understand . For Peter Byck of the Louisville Courier-Journal , Iraq in Fragments was a beautifully filmed biography of a country on the brink of civil war . Film Comment awarded five stars (= perfect) for an extraordinary journalistic coup and saw 'Iraq in Fragments' as a powerful film that demands to be seen .
