John Sinno - also Yahya Sinno - (* 1963 or 1964 in Beirut , Lebanon ) is a Lebanese film producer and film editor who was nominated for an Oscar in 2007.

Life

Sinno was born and raised in Beirut, where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the American University of Beirut . In 1984 he moved to the United States , where he graduated from the University of Southern California . He received his Masters in Communication Theory and an MFA in Film Production, and was awarded the Arkoff Prize in 1989 for his first film, Killing a Deer . In 1990, Sinno founded Video Press , which he ran until he moved to Seattle in 1993.

For his film work in 1998, Sinno - still as Yahya Sinno - worked with James Culbertson to edit the documentary Nusrat! Live at Meany responsible. The film illuminates the life and work of the Pakistani musician Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan . In 1998, Sinno joined Arab Film Distribution, of which he became president that same year. In 2005 he founded the production company Typecast Films.

In 2007 , Sinno and James Longley received an Oscar nomination for Iraq in Fragments in the “Best Documentary” category . Sinno co-directed with James Longley and both also served as producers of the award-winning film. However, the Oscar went to Davis Guggenheim and his documentary An Inconvenient Truth About Global Warming. After the award ceremony, Sinno wrote an open letter to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , in which he took offense at the moderation of the presenter Jerry Seinfeld , who had torn his "comments at the expense of thousands of documentary filmmakers and the entire genre". He also found Seinfeld's introduction that all five nominated films were "incredibly depressing" inappropriate. He also protested against the disrespect for the nominees and their work, which went against the principles of the academy. All documentary filmmakers deserve an apology from the academy.

In 2009, Sinno was the executive producer of the horror film with splatter elements , Zombieworld . The people in the island city of Port Gamble lead a peaceful life ... until the day when a zombie changes everything. In My Name Is Smith in 2010 is again a documentary in which the director James Allen Smith returns to the place of his childhood in order to deal with the lives of his parents. Sinno produced the film.
