Tom Perrotta
Thomas R. Perrotta (born August 13, 1961 in Garwood , New Jersey ) is an American writer and screenwriter .
Life
Perrotta came from a Catholic Italian - Albanian family from Italy . When he was still at school, he wrote short stories for his school newspaper. He received his bachelor's degree in English from Yale University and then went to Syracuse University , where he graduated with a Master of Arts in creative writing . One of his teachers there was Tobias Wolff .
Perrotta subsequently went to Harvard University as a lecturer in creative writing . During these years he completed three novels, of which only two have been published to date. In 1994 he published a collection of short stories. His first novel, The Wishbones, followed in 1997 .
Perrotta's novel The Election was discovered by film director Alexander Payne as a template for a film and published as a book in 1998. The film itself was released in April 1999, starring Matthew Broderick and Reese Witherspoon .
His 2004 novel Little Children was Perrotta's breakthrough. He has received many awards. The 2006 screenplay for the film, which he wrote with Todd Field , has been nominated for several film awards, including the 2007 Academy Awards . He then wrote other scripts, such as for Rob Greenberg's Barry and Stan Gone Wild . His novel The Leftovers (German: Die Verlassenen ) about how members of a small town family deal with the consequences of a puzzling global catastrophe is the template for the HBO series The Leftovers . HBO has also announced a film adaptation of his novel Mrs Fletcher (leading role: Kathryn Hahn ).
In 2007, Perrotta was visiting professor at the invitation of Dennis Lehane at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg (Florida) . The two writers had previously met at the Stonecoast Writers Conference in Portland, Maine .
Perrotta has been married since 1991 and lives with his wife and two children in the Boston suburb in Belmont, Massachusetts .
