Sherry Lansing (born Sherry Lee Heimann ; born July 31, 1944 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American film actress and film producer .

Life

Lansing's mother, who was still a minor, was forced to leave Nazi Germany because of her Jewish beliefs and emigrated to the USA without knowing a word of English . Here she met the American Norton Lansing, whom she married and whose family name she now adopted.

Lansing grew up in Chicago and as a young woman studied math , English and drama at Northwestern University , where she received her bachelor's degree in 1966 . Shortly thereafter, she moved to Los Angeles , where she worked as a teacher at a high school in the Watts district for almost four years . In order to supplement her budget on the side, she worked as a model , among other things for the cosmetics company Max Factor .

In 1970 Lansing received his first small roles, including in Rio Lobo on the side of John Wayne . Despite starring in a handful of TV series afterwards, Lansing was quickly drawn behind the camera. After serving as a story editor and screenwriter, Lansing became vice president of Columbia Pictures in 1977 . Another six years later, in 1984, she founded the independent production company Jaffee-Lansing with the film producer Stanley R. Jaffe .

In 1990 Lansing joined the Paramount Pictures board of directors and was elected President of the company in 1992. Lansing was the first woman in the boardroom of such a powerful film production company. Under her leadership as Chief Executive Officer , Paramount has made numerous successful films, including Titanic (1997) and Saving Private Ryan (1998), which have won numerous Academy Awards. Lansing was President of the Paramount Group for almost 13 years and withdrew from the film business into private life in 2005. In the same year she founded the Sherry Lansing Foundation , a non-governmental organization whose goal it is to stand up for the fight against cancer .

In 2007 she received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award , an honorary Oscar, for her services to the film industry . A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame also reminds of Sherry Lansing. In 2014 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

She has been married to film director William Friedkin since July 1991 .
