Rodion Mychailovytsch Luka ( Ukrainian Родіон Михайлович Лука ; born October 29, 1972 ) is a Ukrainian sailor. His greatest successes include winning the silver medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics and winning the bronze medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics . In addition, he was sailing world and European champion in 2005 in the 49er class . In 2005 Luka was named Sportsman of the Year in Ukraine.

biography

Rodion Luka was born on October 29, 1972 into a family of engineers and went to school in Vyshhorod . He started sailing at the age of eleven. He got his first experience in this field while teaching on the Kiev reservoir .

In 1985 Rodion Luka won the "Republican Regatta" of the USSR and began preparing for the Youth Championship of the USSR. His sailing career began in 1988 when he won all youth competitions including the Ukrainian Championship and the USSR Championship.

Rodion Luka is married and has two children.

education

In 1995 he graduated from the National University of Physical Education and Sport in the field of management of professional and Olympic sport . In 1999 he graduated from the Kiev State Academy of Water Transport in the field of “helmsman, shipmaster”.

Sporting successes

Rodion Luka received his first international trophy in 1993 when he won the Laser-Radial class at Warnemünde Week . He won bronze at the European Championships in Sardinia. In 1994 the athlete won silver at the European Championships in England and the World Championships in Japan. In 1996 Rodion Luka represented Ukraine at the Olympic Games in the Laser class .

The next year he started the Sydney 2000 Olympic campaign with Georgi Leontschuck in the 49ers class. In 1999 Rodion Luka received a license to participate in the 2000 Summer Olympics , where he finished 10th. At the same time he won the title of Master of Australia and bronze in the European championship in the 49er class.

  • In the 2000s, Rodion Luka had his breakthrough in sailing. Together with the team he achieved first place in the world rankings ISAF of the International Association of Sailing (2002-2003), the world championship in the 49er class and in 2005 led the world rankings.
  • In 2005, Rodion Luka received the title of Sportsman of the Year in Ukraine according to the version of the National Olympic Committee .
  • In 2008 he won bronze in the European and World Championships, and in 2012 he became the champion in England, Russia and Europe in the SB20 class.

Regatta Volvo Ocean Race

In 2008–2009, Rodion Luka was the only Ukrainian who took part in the Volvo Ocean Race as a rudder on the sailing boat “Kasatka”.

Training and educational work

From 2012 to 2013 Rodion Luka worked as a trainer in the RC 44 class . In 2012 he founded a yacht school, the Kiev Racing Yacht Club. This club created the conditions for sailing lessons for people who do not have the time and money to buy and maintain their own sailing boats. The club organizes amateur regattas and the club's teams take part in international competitions.
