Vyshhorod (Ukrainian Вишгород ; Russian Вышгород / Vyshgorod ) is a city in Ukraine with around 27,800 inhabitants (2016), 20 km north of Kiev and the administrative center of the raion of the same name .

geography

The city is located in the Kiev Oblast at the southern end of the Kiev Sea , on the right side of the Dnieper near the mouth of the Desna, which flows from the left . To the north of the city in the village of Novi Petrivtsi is the Mezhyhirja estate , the former residence of Viktor Yanukovych .

history

Vyshhorod was founded in 946 AD. It was not until 1968 that the place received city rights.

During the Second World War, the lakes in central Ukraine formed a barrier to the Red Army, which was moving westward. She suffered heavy losses near Vyshhorod in 1943, because south of the Kiev Sea there were more suitable ways to cross the Dnieper. Fierce fighting broke out near the mouth of the Desnam because Soviet troops concentrated their fighting there. As a result of the fighting, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher of the martyr saints Boris and Gleb , the patron saints of the Kiev Empire, was destroyed. This was rebuilt by 2010. A monument with the patron saint was unveiled on the occasion of the city celebration on July 30, 2011 in front of the City Hall and consecrated by the Ukrainian Orthodox Bishop of the Kiev region. From 2006 until his death in 2015 Viktor Reshetnjak was the city's mayor.

Sports

From July 29 to 31, 2011, the world's first F1 motorboat race (F1H2O) took place, which attracted more than 80,000 spectators. The team from Abu Dhabi won. The world championship races for 2012 to 2015 have already been contractually secured for Vyshgorod.
