Wassylkiw ( Ukrainian Васильків , Russian Васильков Wassilkow ) is a city in Ukraine in Kiev Oblast with about 37,300 inhabitants (as of 2017), about 30 kilometers southwest of Kiev . The city is located on the River Stuhna (Стугна) and is the center of the raion of the same name .
history
A settlement has always existed on the site of the city. A fortress was built here in 988 on the orders of Vladimir the Great to protect Kiev from the south. The fortress and the city were named after the Christian name of Vladimir Vasilev .
In 1796 Wassylkiw received city rights.
