Theodosius of Kiev ( Ukrainian Феодосій Печерський Feodossij Petscherskyj , Russian Феодосий Печерский Feodosy Pechersky * about 1036 in Vasylkiv , Kievan Rus , † 3. May 1074 in Kiev ) was an Orthodox monk and one of the founders of the Kiev-Pechersk monastery and the monastic life in Russia . He is venerated as a saint in the Russian Orthodox Church . His feast day is May 3rd.

Life

Theodosius of Kiev was born into a boyar family in Vasylkiv near Kiev. Soon after his birth, the family moved to Kursk , where his father became mayor. He learned to read and write at the age of seven and familiarized himself with the life of a monk from books and stories, which he intended to imitate. After losing his father at the age of 14, he decided to live as a Christian ascetic against his mother's opposition . She successfully prevented Theodosius from making a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and from then on kept him in chains to prevent another departure. However, he was able to flee to Kiev and was taken in by Antony of Kiev . In the Kiev caves he soon became a priest-monk and not long afterwards the hegumen of the monastery. As head of the monastery, he dealt with the expansion of the monastery buildings including the construction of the main Church of the Assumption (construction started in 1078) and introduced exemplary monastery rules for Russian monasteries.

Theodosius died in Kiev in 1074 and was buried in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. Nestor of Kiev , who wrote a biography of Theodosius in the 1080s, paid a visit to his relics in 1091. At that time, these were transferred to the already consecrated Assumption Cathedral of the cave monastery. In 1108 Theodosius was canonized.
