Antonius von Kiev ( Ukrainian Антоній Печерський Antonij Pecherskyj , Russian Антоний Печерский Antoni Pecherski , transferred about: Antonius von den Höhlen ; *  983 in Lyubetsch , Kiev Rus ; † July 10, 1073 in Kiev. Was the founder of the monastery in Russia of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra .

Life

Antonius was born in 983 as Antipas in Lyubetsch, 50 km northwest of Chernihiv . As a young man he lived in a dug cave. Later he traveled to Mount Athos , where he took the monastery vows in Esfigmenou Monastery and took the name Antonius in honor of Antony the Great . After he returned to the Kievan Rus, he lived near a village in the urban area of today's city of Kiev in a small cave on the bank of the Dnieper, where many monks soon joined him, from which the Kiev Pechersk Lavra developed, whose spiritual leader he became and in which he imparted the deep prayer life of Athos to the monks.

After the death of Vladimir I , he fled the fratricidal war between his sons Yaroslav the Wise and Svyatopolk to Athos again, but soon returned to the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra due to a conflict. Under the rule of Isjaslav I , he went to Chernihiv in the spring of 1069 and founded a new cave monastery there. He later returned to Kiev and was involved in the laying of the foundation stone of the Assumption Cathedral of the monastery in 1073 . He died at the age of 90 in the monastery and was buried in the nearby caves of the Assumption Cathedral of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra.

On his icons he is often represented together with his student Theodosius of Kiev , who, like him, is considered to be the founder of Russian monasticism.
