Svyatopolk's coins

Svjatopolk I ( Russian Святополк Владимирович ; * 978 or 979; † 1019 ) was Prince of Turow (around 990-1019) and Grand Prince of Kiev (1015-1016 and 1018-1019).

His nickname Okajanny , the Cursed , comes from the fact that his (adoptive) father Vladimir I took his mother as his wife after he had murdered her husband, his half-brother Jaropolk I.

Life

Svyatopolk was probably born in 978 or 979. It is unclear who his father was. He was probably the son of Jaropolk I and a Czech mother. After his death, Vladimir took the probably pregnant widow as his wife and accepted the child as a legitimate heir. Around 990 he was given the newly founded Principality of Turow by Vladimir . He married a daughter of the Polish ruler Bolesław I.

After the death of Vladimir in 1015, he first asserted himself as the new grand prince in the capital Kiev . However, his half-brother Yaroslav stayed in Novgorod , the second most important city of the Rus, and collected Scandinavian warriors there. During the first fighting, Boris and Gleb , two other sons of Vladimir, were murdered, for which the Nestor Chronicle of Svyatopolk blames. In the summer of 1016 the armies of Svyatopolk and Yaroslav faced each other for three months. Finally there was a decisive battle in which Svyatopolk was defeated. He fled to Poland to his father-in-law, who then tried to intervene in the Kievan Rus on his behalf. In the summer of 1017, Jaroslaw I and Emperor Heinrich II attacked Bolesław I from two sides, following a previous agreement. In the summer of 1018, however, Bolesław succeeded in conquering Kiev and reinstated Svjatopolk as Grand Duke. Yaroslav managed to flee to Novgorod, but his female relatives and a large gold treasure fell into the hands of the Polish king. Shortly afterwards, however, Yaroslav Svyatopolk expelled from Kiev again. After that, Svyatopolk no longer played a political role.
