Dormition Cathedral in Kiev

The Dormition Cathedral (also Uspensky Cathedral or Assumption Cathedral ) in Kiev is a representative Baroque church building in the area of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra . The cathedral was built in the Byzantine style in 1073 during the epoch of the Kievan Rus and was for a long time the most important religious building in ancient Russia. In the 18th century it was rebuilt in the style of the Cossack baroque.

The structure was blown up during the German occupation of Kiev in the Battle of Kiev in autumn 1941. Albert Speer stated in his memoir that this was done on the orders of the Reich Commissioner of Ukraine Erich Koch . As part of the Nazi ideology, the identity-creating cult sites of the subjugated peoples were to be removed.

The church was rebuilt from 1998 to 2000 in as original a form as possible. It is therefore one of the reborn places of worship frequently found in the successor states of the Soviet Union .
