Priest monk

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As a priest monk , monk-priest or Hieromonachos ( Greek ἱερομόναχος ; from ἱερός hieros 'holy, consecrated' [compare ἱερεύς hereus 'priest'] and μοναχός monachos 'monk') one describes monks who have received the priestly ordination. Usually this term is in the Orthodox churches needed, while in the Roman Catholic Church of religious priests is spoken.

In the Eastern Churches , the title of Igumen or even Archimandrite can only be bestowed on a priest-monk. The number of priests in an Orthodox monastery is also very small; not all who have graduated from theology are ordained priests.
