Hegumen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hegumen (also Igumen or Hegumenos ) is the head of the monastery in the monastery of the Orthodox Churches . The term is derived from the ancient Greek hēgoúmenos (ἡγούμενος, "leader", "head"). In modern Greek it is Igoumenos . In Bulgarian , Macedonian , Russian and Ukrainian the hegumen is referred to as Igumen , in Romanian as Egumen , in Georgian as Iğumeni , and in Serbian as Iguman .

The feminine form would be Hegumene (appropriately transcribed as Igoumeni ).
