Usyn ( Ukrainian Узин ; Russian Узин Usin ) is a city in the Bila Tserkva Raion in the Kiev Oblast of Ukraine with about 12,500 inhabitants (2006).

The largest industrial operations are a sugar combine, which accounts for 7% of Ukrainian sugar production, and a canning factory.

Usyn was a base of the Ukrainian Air Force .

history

The city was first mentioned in 1590 under the name Usenyzja, later as Tenberzhyna. It has had its current name since the end of the 18th century. In 1971 Usyn was promoted to town .

Personalities

  • Pavel Popovich, a Soviet cosmonaut who took part in the first group flight into space, was born in Usyn in 1930. He was also the first Ukrainian cosmonaut.
